Mohammed Shami took five wickets as Australia were all out for 276 batting first in Mohali. India then got off to a good start in response with a purring Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad slamming half-centuries and taking India to 142 in no time. With the match slipping away, Australia fought back timely with Adam Zampa dismissing the two set batters and Shreyas Iyer falling to an unfortunate run out. Ishan Kishan and KL Rahul’s 34-run partnership steadied India’s chase before Pat Cummins dismissed the young India wicketkeeper batter. With 89 needed off 99, the onus is now on Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav to see India through. SKY finally showed what he can do in the ODI format, keeping away from the flashy shots until he scored a half-century. He was on 50 off 49 when he fell to Sean Abbott but his 80-run stand with Rahul off 85 balls has put India on the brink of victory.
Australia were earlier buoyed by a splendid half-century from David Warner as part of a 94-run partnership with Steve Smith for the second wicket before India managed to get back in the game. Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami intervened at crucial junctures to provide India with two much-needed breakthroughs. Marnus Labuschagne then fell to a rather freakish stumping off Ravichandran Ashwin after which rain interrupted the game for a few minutes. Cameron Green and Josh Inglis seemed to be holding fort well after resumption, until the former was run out thanks to a calamitous mix-up with his partner. Marcus Stoinis and Inglis then went on the counter. The pair put up 62 runs off just 43 balls for the sixth wicket before Stoinis fell to Shami. Shami went on to complete his five-wicket haul by taking two wickets in the second last over of the Australian innings. Pat Cummins smashed 21 runs in nine balls to finish things off for Australia. Adam Zampa was run out off the last ball and Australia were all out for 276 in 50 overs.
