Sumit Nagal scripted history as he beats world ranking 55th Diaz Acosta of Argentina in the final qualifying round at the Rolex Monte Carlo Masters. Nagal is first Indian to reach main draw of Monte Carlo Masters 1000 in 42 years. The last Indian to play in the Monte Carlo main draw was Ramesh Krishnan in 1982 however he lost in round 1.
95th in world rankings Nagal defeated Acosta 7-5, 2-6, 6-2. Earlier on Saturday Nagal defeated world ranking 63rd Flavio Cobolli of Italy in first qualifying round.
This is Nagal’s 10th win against Top 100 players of which 8 have come on Clay courts. After returning from injury last year Nagal has been playing good tennis and had made to 2nd round of Australian Open main draw this year. Since Nagal plays well on clay courts Indian fans will expect him to do good in ~2 month long clay season.
